Specialist Groups

Specialist groups operate within the preschool teaching program. Although these are largely aimed at extension for 4 year olds, younger children are often involved as well.

Four Year Old Choir

Comprising around 50 children, the Four Year Old Choir is unique. The Kindergarten produces its own audio tapes with original arrangements of folksongs, traditional songs and some modern pop ballads. There is often a story as well. Children love learning the songs which are all done with accompanying actions and the concert is a highlight for parents and friends who take delight in being an audience.

Snappy Feet

A dance group for 4 year-olds who learn a simple choreographed routine and perform it at the Four-Year-Old Choir Concerts. The value lies in being part of a team and remembering all those moves.

Children's Orchestra and Pre-Violin Lessons

This operates on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as an extension group. We use a selection of tuned and untuned percussion instruments and demonstrate to parents twice a year. We concentrate on children developing an understanding of the relationship between the natural rhythm of words and the constructed rhythm of musical notation. Simple stories are told using rhythmic patterns and chants. A small group of children, who show interest, are taught simple notation.

Pre-Violin introduces children to violin in small groups. It operates on Friday afternoons. We have fun learning to hold the instrument and games to captivate children's interest and awareness in this classical instrument.

Transition to School

The transition to a child's formal school setting is crucial if children and families are to have their needs well met in their new education setting. Teachers within the Mozarts and primary settings work together in partnership with families/whanau to ensure good flow of information about settings and to support children during the transition to school.

Four-Year-Old Group time takes place regularly within the daily programme and children work to master the skills they need to have in order to make a seamless transition to the primary school of their choice.
